ABSTRACT This report from the Army War College Observatory analyzes the main military and geopolitical developments between 2 and 8 March 2026, highlighting two primary strategic theaters: the Russia–Ukraine war and the escalating confrontation in the Middle East involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. The analysis shows an intensification of military operations characterized by precision strikes, drones, ballistic missiles, and proxy warfare, reflecting the multidomain nature of contemporary conflicts. In the Russia–Ukraine theater, Russian precision airstrikes targeted Ukrainian defensive positions in Donetsk, while Ukrainian forces conducted attacks against Russian naval assets in the Black Sea and destroyed air defense systems in southern Ukraine. Both sides also intensified strikes against energy infrastructure, indicating a strategy aimed at weakening the opponent’s economic and logistical resilience. In the Middle East, the most significant development was the Israeli air campaign against Iranian strategic infrastructure, including oil depots, refineries, and logistical facilities in Tehran and Karaj. These operations coincided with attacks by pro-Iranian militias against U.S. bases in Iraq and Iran’s restriction of maritime transit in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor. Overall, the report highlights the transformation of modern warfare into prolonged multidomain conflicts, where technological superiority, attacks on critical infrastructure, and geopolitical pressure on energy systems shape the evolving global strategic environment.
